This is not your mother’s yoga class — unless she appreciates old school hip hop, rap, and R&B beats.
Hip Hop Yoga is a heated power yoga class held Tuesdays from 8:00-9:00pm taught by RAC instructor Chelsey Peacock. Practice is located in studio two and is candle-lit (battery powered/non-flammable).
“This has to be a thing for people that like hip hop music,” Chelsey said. Music selections are kept almost entirely PG-13, but parents are advised that this should be an 18+ class. Music artists include: A Tribe Called Quest, Jay-Z, Common, Outkast, Drake, Fugees, and many more.
I tried this new class during it’s pilot and as a casual yogi, I found the practice to be entirely worth the late night sweat. Overall, the class isn’t overly complicated… you won’t be learning breakdancing head balances — just good old fashioned yoga poses, arm balances, and inversions.
“I really like the idea of people showing up for hip hop yoga that might not normally come to a yoga class,” said Chelsey. “It’s fun and lighthearted. Mellow, yet strengthening.”
Unlike other yoga classes, the music sets a faster, upbeat pace, keeping this late evening class lively and awake. Like most RAC classes, Hip Hop Yoga can be adapted to any skill level and newcomers are always welcome.
One of the few downsides to this class is that it does fill up quickly. I recommend arriving 7-10 minutes early to grab a spot that works for you.
The best part? After your body cools down from the class and the work, you’ll fall right to sleep. It’s one of the most natural sleep aids you can get, and the workout isn’t bad either!
In terms of yoga classes, I give it a 9.5 out of 10, and that’s only after the first week. Give it a shot Raintree members!
