RAC FITNESS FOR LIFE SCHOLARSHIP
The RAC Scholarship was designed in 2012 to provide membership to a person, couple or family in need of a healthier lifestyle that may not currently have a gym membership as a tool to achieving their goals. It was first awarded in January of 2013 to a young man named Ben Gaither; read his story below.
Ben Gaither is more than aware that the process is not overnight.
The inaugural winner of the RAC Fitness For Life Scholarship began his journey in January and while the process has been slow, he is seeing results. "I'm making it in three or four day a week,” said the 31-year old who affectionately goes by ‘House’.
The scholarship allows House to meet with Brandon Brooks (one of our many talented RAC trainers) on a quarterly basis and RAC Sports & Wellness Dietitian Lara Ulfers. The former football player at Poudre High School has little trouble with the weightlifting and strength aspects of his workout, it’s the grueling cardio that he is still learning to employ into his routine. "There is a lot of potential there. He has a lot of core strength and a lot of residual strength,” Brandon said. “But now, it’s more a matter of fat loss for him and that involves a lot of cardiovascular activity and that’s something that he just doesn’t like to do yet.”
His time with Lara has been the most beneficial. Learning what can and cannot be a part of his diet. I was kind of shocked when she told me some of the things I could eat,” House said. “The media tends to make a lot of things sound bad for you when they are really not. Said Lara: “House has been terrific to work with. He is the ideal client because his self motivation propels his eagerness to learn and make change to his eating patterns. His questions are thoughtful and provoke deeper insight into how we can best navigate his world of nutrition to benefit his health goal. Making dietary changes is always a personal journey, often riddle with daily challenges as well as successes. House has taken all of this in stride and continues to work hard on building a solid foundation of healthy eating that works for him.”
House has a goal to lose 40 pounds by the end of the year and with the help of the RAC team, he should have no trouble meeting and then exceeding the challenge in front of him.
